Sales for Beginners Introduction

When it comes to sales for beginners, this article is going to provide you with basic yet essential knowledge. It will teach you the following: How to communicate to your potential customer that your product is trustworthy. What questions to have in mind for finding your ideal customer. How to understand what your customer needs. How to handle their objections/answer their questions, and how to close sales.

Selling is a fundamental skill. Whether you have a product, service, or a business. Knowing how to make sales effectively can increase both your income and your self-esteem. It all comes down to knowing your product, what your customer needs, and who your customer is. After that, it is about handling their objections and closing the sale. In this sales for beginners article, I will be covering all of the above-mentioned parts of sales and more!

Know your Product

Know every detail of what you sell very well. When it comes to sales, beginners often try to sell something they do not understand well enough. This is a crucial mistake, always know what you sell and know A TON about it. Your customer is way more likely to buy if they see that you are knowledgeable about your product’s effects. It makes you more trustworthy and reassures the customer of your product.

I suggest researching whatever it is you are planning to sell to the point where you can understand it well enough to explain it to anyone. Practice explaining the product to yourself as well. It’s a great way to see if you lack understanding of your product and doing this can make you a better speaker.

Know your Customer

Who are you trying to sell to?  How old are they? Are your customers male or female? What are their interests?

Make a demographic of your ideal customer. An ideal customer is an average person in the market you are planning to sell to. Knowing your ideal customer can help you with marketing to certain audiences instead of showcasing your product to everyone. Not every product is for everyone and therefore finding your ideal customer is a must regardless of what you sell.

For example, if your product is men’s suits you would not want to market them to women as they would not be interested in the product.

Know your Customer’s Needs

Make a list of what your customer needs. What need of theirs does your product fulfill? Why are they buying your product from you? What are they expecting from the product?

Find ways to pass on to them that your product can fulfill their needs and meet their expectations. Justify their need to buy your product. Find solutions to their problems and showcase these solutions to them.

By knowing your customer better and finding what they need, selling to them becomes easier as you can show them that their problems will be solved by buying your product.

Handling Customer Objections

Some customers are in the middle ground between wanting to buy your product and not wanting to buy it. In situations like these, you have to reassure them that your product fulfills whatever they need it for. Answering the questions they are thinking of by providing knowledge and facts about the product reassures them.

An example of this would be a person who works out and wants to buy protein supplements, but is unsure of any possible side effects. The seller reassures him by showing him that there are no side effects to using protein supplements.

Not Everyone Will Buy

After finding a product and the ideal customer demographic to sell to, you will realize that not everyone is going to buy. Regardless of how well you sell, or how much a customer’s description fits your ideal customer. Sometimes you will not sell and that is fine. Not everything is within your control and a customer may cancel the deal for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with how well you sell or how good your product is. Be prepared for multiple “No’s” and learn to accept them as it is natural and this happens to even the best sellers.

Closing the Sale

Closing the sale is making your customer decide whether or not they want the product you are trying to sell to them. It can be done through various techniques, such as: Making a final offer and letting them decide. Summarizing the benefits of your product, or asking them what they think about the product. Though with that last one they either will say “I like it” and buy it or will give you some other objections they may have and then you can clear those up too. Do not get too pushy though, if they do not want to buy they will not buy and that’s fine. As soon as you close the sale and shake hands all that is left for you to do is provide the service or product for the customer’s money.
