Gratitude Boosts Happiness

One of the major benefits associated with practicing gratitude is that it is known to increase happiness. Gratitude directly switches our focus from a negative point of view toward a positive point of view. Many of us are naturally obsessed with wanting more, unsatisfied with what we have, or disappointed at the experiences we have. When we practice gratitude, we switch to a positive point of view and we focus on what we are thankful for, how much we appreciate what we have, and we look for things that bring joy. This shift can make a major impact on our moods.

Practicing gratitude is a powerful tool for creating a strong mindset. It not only helps us feel happier and experience more joy, but it has some other benefits. As we practice gratitude, it can become a habit. This habit can have a powerful impact on resilience by helping us respond to negative situations in a positive way. Next time that something does not go as planned, spend some time focusing on things that you can be grateful for. This will lessen the pain of what went wrong and it will give you a positive perspective so that you can make positive decisions going forward.

Strengthen Social Relationships

Gratitude has the ability to strengthen social relationships. By being in a positive mindset, you’ll be able to connect with other people better. People will enjoy your presence and want to spend time around you. This is because energy transfers. Have you ever been around someone that complains all the time? What happens? You start to complain also. When people are around positive people, they start to feel those positive emotions. Similarly, positive energy attracts other positive energy. There is a common phrase that goes, “Birds of a feather flock together” and this means that like attracts like. So by surrounding yourself with positive energy, you will attract other people into your life that also have positive energy. This is a good loop to be in. You are positive, which makes others more positive, and they make you more positive, and it keeps cycling. All of this positivity begins when you first start practicing gratitude.

Another way that this can create stronger social relationships is by expressing gratitude to others. Imagine someone genuinely expressing their gratitude toward you, how would you feel? You would probably feel great. The thing is people like people that make them feel good about themselves. So by expressing gratitude to the people in your life, you’ll be appreciated more in return.

Finally, by practicing gratitude, there is also a biological change within you. Expressing gratitude initiates a cascade of neurochemical reactions. These reactions can cause the release of Oxytocin which is often called “the love hormone” and sometimes it’s referred to as “the trust hormone”. After this, you’ll feel a deeper connection, enhanced trust, stronger empathy, and better understanding. All of these things can result in a more meaningful relationship with other people.

Improve Resilience By Practicing Gratitude

Gratitude can improve resilience by changing the way we see the situation. A negative situation can be seen from a negative perspective or a positive perspective. Likewise, we can respond to a negative situation in a negative way or a positive way. Gratitude fills us with positive emotions and uplifts our spirits. When we see the world from a positive perspective, we are more likely to respond with a positive and beneficial reaction. By adopting a grateful mindset, we are able to bounce back from failures and face tough challenges with strength and optimism. Gratitude is the key to overcoming negative situations.

Implement Gratitude into Your Life

Now that you’ve explored some of the incredible benefits of gratitude, it’s time to take action and begin. Developing deep levels of gratitude is a journey and can take some time, so it’s best to start soon. It would also be wise to continue and never stop practicing the habit of being grateful. Let’s get started so you can start enjoying the benefits of gratitude.

The easiest way to begin is by starting a journal. Make it a daily habit to write 3 things in that journal every single day that you are thankful for. Reflect on these things for a few moments and try to really feel grateful for them. As you write down these positive aspects, let gratitude fill your heart.

Examples:

  • I’m grateful for having clean drinking water.
  • I’m grateful for the taste of my food.
  • I’m grateful for sunlight.

Another great way to implement gratitude into your life daily is by thinking of things that make you grateful throughout the day. You may come across something that makes you happy. Take a moment to appreciate it and to mentally acknowledge that you are thankful for it. If you can get out into nature, this is a great time to think about things you’re grateful for. Even while doing your daily tasks, gratitude can be on your mind. It’s simple: Make gratitude a part of your daily routine by thinking of things and acknowledging the things that you’re thankful for.

Finally, Take a moment to show appreciation to the people who have positively impacted your life. Consider writing a thank-you note, sending an email expressing gratitude, or simply expressing your gratitude in person. These acts of gratitude strengthen relationships and cultivate a sense of fulfillment.

Be Grateful for What You Have Through Self-Reflection

A wonderful way to practice gratitude is through self-reflection. Sit in a quiet place, alone and without distraction. Think about all of the things you have, the achievements you have, the experiences you have, and the blessings that you have. Sit there in silence and meditate on the joy that these things give you. Sit there and meditate on the idea that you are lucky and look for reasons in your mind to prove to yourself that you are lucky.

When I speak about self-reflection, I am not saying that you need to be materialistic. You can sit there and feel joy for simply breathing air. You can feel joy for having a chance to live. Likewise, you could feel joy for any simple thing that most people overlook. All of these little blessings are worth being thankful for.
